A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic phrase) is a set of 12 or 24 randomly generated words that acts as the master backup for your crypto wallet. When you first set up a non-custodial wallet, the software generates this phrase and asks you to write it down and store it safely.

Your seed phrase can regenerate all of the private keys associated with your wallet. If your phone breaks, your computer crashes, or you lose access to your wallet app, you can use the seed phrase to restore everything on a new device.

Because of this power, your seed phrase is the single most important piece of information in your crypto journey. Here are critical safety rules:

  • Write it down on paper – Never store it in a screenshot, cloud document, or email.
  • Keep it offline – Digital storage is vulnerable to hacking and malware.
  • Store it in a secure place – Consider a fireproof safe or safety deposit box.
  • Never share it – No legitimate service, exchange, or support agent will ever ask for your seed phrase.
  • Consider a metal backup – Steel seed phrase plates protect against fire and water damage.

If someone obtains your seed phrase, they gain complete control of your funds. There is no customer support to call and no way to reverse stolen transactions on the blockchain.
